Botox® FAQ

  • What is Botox® ?

Botox® is a refined form of a neurotoxin derived from bacteria, specifically Clostridium. It works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles where it is injected, preventing them from contracting. This temporary weakening or paralysis of the muscles leads to a reduction in visible facial wrinkles and lines, offering a smoother appearance.

  • When and why is Botox® used?

Primarily, Botox® is used to mitigate the signs of aging by smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines that emerge from common facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, or laughing. It is an effective solution for those seeking to maintain a youthful appearance without the need for invasive surgical procedures.

  • Would I be a good candidate for Botox® ?

Almost anyone desiring to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, or other minor facial imperfections may be a suitable candidate for Botox®, except for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neurological conditions. Botox® can also serve as a preventative measure against the formation of deep lines, making it a popular choice among younger individuals.

  • What can I expect in terms of recovery?

One of the advantages of Botox® is its minimal recovery time, allowing patients to quickly resume their daily activities. Unlike more invasive facial treatments, Botox® requires no significant downtime, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.

  • Are Botox® injections painful?

The discomfort associated with Botox® injections is generally minimal, as the needles used are very fine, similar to those used by diabetics for insulin injections. Additionally, numbing agents such as lidocaine may be used to enhance patient comfort during the procedure.

  • How frequently should Botox® treatments be repeated?

The duration of Botox's® effects varies, with the average being around four months. However, the frequency of treatments can be adjusted according to personal preference and the desired outcome, allowing for a more natural appearance by letting the effects diminish slightly between sessions.

  • Roughly how much does Botox® cost in NZ?

The cost can vary depending on the specific areas being treated and the amount of Botox® required. For instance, treating frown lines might involve the use of approximately 20 units of Botox®, with costs potentially around $440, but prices can vary widely based on location and provider.

  • Is "preventative Botox®" a thing?

Starting Botox® treatments before the appearance of deep lines or wrinkles can be a preventative strategy to maintain a youthful appearance. However, the necessity and desirability of such an approach vary, with some professionals advising a more natural look by retaining some facial lines.

  • What if I decide not to continue Botox® treatments?

Discontinuing Botox® treatments will simply allow the previously treated lines and wrinkles to gradually return, often more slowly than if no treatment had been received. There is no risk of the lines worsening as a result of stopping treatment.

  • What can I expect on treatment day?

During the procedure, a practitioner will inject small amounts of Botox® into targeted muscles, temporarily relaxing them to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. The process is quick and requires no downtime, allowing patients to immediately return to their normal activities.

  • Will Botox® affect my facial expressions or sense of feeling?

The goal of Botox® treatment is to achieve a natural look by carefully targeting specific muscles, without impacting the ability to express emotions or the sensation in the treated areas.

  • What should I do after receiving Botox®?

Post-treatment, it's important to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas to prevent the Botox® from spreading to unintended muscles. Additionally, strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least two hours following the procedure.

  • What are the potential side effects of Botox®?

While most side effects are mild and temporary, such as swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site, more serious side effects are extremely rare. The safety and efficacy of Botox® are well-documented, with millions of successful treatments performed annually. For details on precautions & side effects consult your healthcare professional or the Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) at www.medsafe.govt.nz.
